Across many cultures, child rearing is seen as a “woman’s job.” However, global research shows that when fathers and mothers work together, their children have the best chance for a healthy development. Dr. Pruett will discuss positive father engagement and its effect on children and families. He will offer practical advice on how fathers can serve as partners in raising their child, and how mothers can support them.

Topic: Creating a Healthy Environment: Strategies for Promoting Nutrition and Physical Activity in Young Children
Health habits learned in early childhood can influence long-term health. Also, poor nutrition, sedentary behavior, and obesity are primary risk factors for chronic disease. Dr. Henderson will present information on what constitutes a young child’s healthy diet and lifestyle. She will address parents’ and caregivers’ most challenging feeding concerns, such as managing picky eating, limiting unhealthy food, and combating food marketing.

Topic: I Can’t Get My Child to Behave! Best Practices for Setting Limits with Young Children
Independence is never easily achieved. When children learn to say, “no,” they are testing their parents and pushing their boundaries in order to learn their own limitations. Dr. Kaplan will address normal, behavioral conflicts that emerge as children begin to develop a sense of independence. He will explain the inner lives of young children and discuss how healthy parenting behaviors during this challenging time.
